El Buen Amigo uses arts as a vehicle to inspire cross-cultural understanding, making the rich cultural heritage of Latin America accessible to everyone via educational and cultural programming, as well as our fair trade storefront. LACA operates as a non-profit organization, where all of the profits earned from our store and outreach events are reinvested in the communities of Central and South America.

The association is based in El Buen Amigo, our fair trade storefront located in the heart of the Allentown district in Buffalo, NY. El Buen Amigo offers our customers fair trade arts, crafts, clothing and coffee direct from artisans and farmers in Latin America. We obtain beautiful handcrafted items from artisans in Central and South America, and the Caribbean, for fair prices. In this way, we help provide impoverished individuals from developing countries with a living income and the opportunity tomaintain a sustainable lifestyle for them and their families. It is also our mission to showcase to the North American public the beauty and the value of Latino culture, a resilient culture that has overcome the greatest tests of slavery, poverty, war and segregation.

LACA also hosts in our gallery space a variety of activities and events which promote cultural awareness in an attempt to connect our Buffalo community with those overseas. We offer a Cultural Extension Program to Western New York school and youth groups in an attempt to open a dialogue and broaden their cultural awareness. Our gallery space hosts art, music and cultural events in an effort to provide Buffalo artists with a warm and welcoming place to showcase their own creations.

464 Gallery presents Nirvana

464 Gallery celebrates turning two years old with an art opening that asks local artists to explore love and enlightenment: what brings them to their personal state of Nirvana.

The opening will include works by local artists: Amanda Maciuba, Candace Keegan, Karen Brady, Salvatore Scrivo, Phil Durgan, Tamora Lee Beckman, Marcus L. Wise, Tara Sasiadek, Jeremy Maxwell, and others.

464 will also be expanding their jewelry collection so that no one will be caught empty handed this coming Valentine’s Day.

Nirvana, for the third year running will reprise their interactive arts installation What's in Your Heart which debuted at their grand opening in 2009 and has since become a popular component of their anniversary events: each visitor cuts out a paper heart and writes what they love on it. Each heart is hung in the display windows of the gallery for the duration of the show’s run.

Over the past year, 464 has hosted over 80 art openings and events, has better than tripled their membership and has represented more than 250 local artists. 464 Gallery has also acted as home base to the newly formed Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo, who along with 464, created the mural at the corner of Grant and Amherst Streets.

This annual show is open to everyone, artists & non-artists to show their art.

Everyone has feelings to express, but they don’t always know what to do with strong, sometimes over whelming emotions. Putting these feelings into artwork is often the answer. Headway of WNY and Impact Artists Gallery will feature speakers that will lead discussions and workshops that educate inspire & promote Art and healing & show and tell how the arts help mental and physical health at free workshops in Feb 2011.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: All media: painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, sculpture, fiber, poetry, journals, bookmaking & video will be included. All 2-D (to be hung on wall) must have a wire or hook on the back for proper hanging to be accepted. Work should express the feelings, emotion, or mood felt in producing the art or evoke it in the viewer. This can be a strong expression or as simple as a feelingof relaxation. Please limit the size of your work to 5‘ wide 7’ high. For large or heavy art, please be there to assist in the hanging or displaying of the art.

Please bring your artwork to the gallery by January 26, 27 & 29, or by appointment. Call first as January hours may vary if the weather causes us to close. Work will be screened, no slides required & no fee.

The number of pieces accepted by each artist will be determined bythe total number submitted to the gallery. Note: we have 1 VCR and TV, and no DVD player. If you need one to display work please call to arrange or bring one.

Humans have been painting themselves for as long as recorded history
remembers. There is something mysterious about the human body, a form
so familiar, yet one that is endlessly fascinating to us.

The exhibition explores the human form through the eyes of four
sculptors, four photographers and nine painters. Works by Jaclyn
Baldassara, Tony Banks, Jonathan Barcan, Zachary Boehler, Myriah
Brown, Alana A. Fajemisin, Amanda Giczkowski, Marilyn Hammer, Maria
Hatzipetros, Porsche Jones, Candace Keegan, MC Koch, Angela Lopez &
Julian Bryce, Dario Mohr, Heather Nath, Cara Lee Nisbeth, Tara
Sasiadek, and Ashley Smith.
The sculptures, photographs, paintings, jewelry and mixed media work

Utu is a word in Swahili, which means the essence or spirit of what
makes one a human being. It is our humanity that makes us unique as
living beings on this planet.

This exhibition hopes to do more than illustrate the endless
variations of the human form. It seeks to bring out the spirit,
humanity and utu in us.

The Allentown Art Festival takes place in the Allentown Historic Preservation District of Buffalo, New York. Tens of Thousands art patrons visit the Festival to enjoy the beauty of Buffalo's weather in June, the charm and uniqueness of the Allentown area and the quality of the art and crafts presented by the over 400 juried exhibitors.

In Buffalo, New York, on one special weekend each June, it is indeed art that makes life for the tens of thousands of people who visit the Allentown Art Festival. Since its modest beginnings as a small art show in 1958, the Allentown has become not only Buffalo’s urban rite, but a symbol for the enduring character of this re-emerging rustbelt region. It has earned an important place in Buffalo’s cultural and social life and a national reputation for excellence.
The Allentown Art Festival is especially remarkable, having persevered and prospered for over 40 years largely due to the members of the Allentown Village Society, Inc., whose active number of unpaid volunteers has seldom grown beyond 30. Their labors have borne fruit beyond the annual Allentown Art Festival weekend and beyond the boundaries of the Allentown neighborhood of Buffalo.
Once, a small art show was a catalyst for the vibrant rebirth of the unique part of the city of Buffalo called “Allentown”.

Yours truly is not officially participating, but I'll have work up at College Street Gallery and possibly B West Gallery. I'll be there, wandering around enjoying the great spectacle, good food and fabulous people watching! Plus it's in my very own neighborhood!

Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic is the Washington, D.C., area's one-of-a-kind multimedia event, involving hundreds of regional artists, performers and volunteers. The free event is an arts extravaganza, featuring paintings, sculpture, photography, music, theater, poetry, dance and workshops.

Artomatic creates community, builds audience and expands economic development by transforming available building space into a playground for artistic expression. Open-entry events showcase creative work including visual art, music, performance, film, and fashion. Artomatic is a non-profit organization headed by a volunteer Board of Directors and is funded in part by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Artomatic began in 1999 in the historic Manhattan Laundry building in Washington, D.C. A dozen or so artists originally toured the empty building and within a month, 350 artists had cleaned, lit, painted and curated its 100,000 square feet. Over 20,000 visitors attended the first Artomatic over six weeks. Artomatic grew organically as buildings were made available by community developers. Music and performance of all kinds were added. In 2000, 665 artists exhibited and 200 performed at the old Hechinger’s building; more than 1,000 artists and performers took part in 2002 at the Southwest Waterfront and even more in 2004 at the former Capitol Children’s Museum in Northeast. Artomatic was held in Virginia for the first time in 2007, occupying a former Patent and Trademark Office space in Crystal City, Arlington. It drew over 40,000 visitors. In 2008, Artomatic was held in the NoMa neighborhood in Washington, D.C., attracting a record-breaking 52,500 visitors, more than any previous Artomatic event. In all, about 1,540 individual artists took part in Artomatic 2008 — also a new high. The total included 740 visual artists — such as painters, sculptors and photographers — who showed thousands of artworks. The event also included individual 800 performing artists, such as dancers, poets, theatre groups, drummers, comedians, fire troupes and musicians. Attractions included a full line-up of educational and children's events and an on-site tattoo parlor. In 2009, Artomatic expanded its reach beyond its single event with the Art of Change ball, held to celebrate the 2009 inauguration, and the Luck of the Draw, a Valentine's weekend art event. Artomatic's main 2009 event will be held May 29-July 5 at Half Street’s 55 M Street, S.E., in D.C.'s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. This will be the 10th anniversary Artomatic, and seventh main event. Artomatic is socially organic and completely open-entry; there are no juries or curators. 80's Flashback; Rockin at the Knox tonight!

So this evening my friend and I are headed back in time to go get our 80's alternative on at the Albright Knox Art Gallery. We have been close friends since grade five and lived through being teenagers in the 1980's together. Yes, our Senior year of high school WAS the breakfast Club. She liked Bruce Springsteen and I liked Duran Duran and the Cure, but despite out musical discrepancies we have remained the closest of friends. So tonight, we dive into nostalgia; taking a trip to the Love shack and gettin our 80's groove on with a Rock Lobster!

I love that our very own Albright Knox; a truly world class museum, is involved in so many great events. They are stellar at linking themselves with music, performance and finding new ways to connect to the community (Gusto, MIA, etc.)

It reminds me that Buffalo is a great place to be!

A DC based artist named Bill Remington recently did a painting after one of my "Lolly-POP" paintings. Mine is the one on the bottom from 2004 and his is above 2008. I was delighted and flattered to have been "abominated" (Reimington refers to them as "abomations") in such a way! I think it's cool when painters can have a dialogue from afar with their work.

Upcoming show at "Artspace Buffalo Gallery"

Last eve when I was over at "Big Orbit", I picked up a postcard for an upcoming exhibit at "Artspace Buffalo Gallery" entitled, "Being Absent". The show will feature work from 19 artists who are all MFA graduates of the University of Buffalo. The opening reception is Friday, October 10 from 7-11, with a video screening at 9. There's also closing event at Hallwalls on Saturday, November 15 at 8. The show is up through November 15th. I plan to head over there as I have not yet been. I've driven by the building and had been following the progress of the space before I moved back.

Artspace Buffalo Gallery is located at 1219 Main Street in Buffalo.

The building opened in 2007 and provides affordable housing and workspace fro artists.

Red Heart/Black Tongues at Big Orbit Gallery

ipwhyouLast eve after heading over to the Albright Knox for Friday Gusto at the Gallery's "Art of Hip-Hop", I attended The opening for Big Orbit's "Red Heart/Black Tongues", a very cool video installation by David Mitchell. The installation is ambitious, with two full-sized cars, taxidermy deer, projected video and controlled lighting. The artist was part of Big Orbit's "Site-Specific Summer Residency Program" wherein an artist working with a site-specific installation project is provided twelve weeks to create a "multi-disciplinary, cross-media discourse that holds the potential to involve more kinds of people in the artistic process."

I was delighted to find "Big Orbit", tucked behind a great old brick building full of artists studios. It reminded me of some of the alternative art spaces I frequented when I lived in DC.

Big Orbit Gallery is located at 30 Essex Street in Buffalo. The exhibit is up through November 20th.

Richard Huntington at Castellani

A couple of Sundays ago I attended the opening for "Richard Huntington, Thus I Pass By-Selections from 1970-2008". Huntington was the art and theatre critic for the Buffalo News from 1985-2007. It's a pretty good sized sampling of work; mostly paintings that range stylistically from German Expressionist-style figuration to cartoony Phillip Guston-like canvases. The show is up until January 18th.

The Castellani Art Museum is located on the campus of Niagara University in Niagara Falls. It's a great cultural venue with several exhibition spaces and top-rate art collections. Check it out!

Dearest Readers, Friends and Supporters,
Many of you already know this, but I thought it now appropriate to announce to the general cyber-surfing population that I will be leaving DC in August to pursue a position as Assistant Professor of Art Education at Buffalo State (SUNY).
I want to take this opportunity to thank everybody who visited Artzee Eye! I plan to keep the Blog, but I am not sure yet to what capacity. As you probably have already noticed, recently I have not been very diligent about updating. Please do check back periodically!
The big move will be two-fold; I grew up in upstate NY (Niagara Falls) so while I await this new experience and know it will be full of new adventures, it is also a long-awaited homecoming. There are many wonderful things about Buffalo; it offers much more than simply snow and cold. (For example: I'll be teaching right across the street from the Albright -Knox Art Gallery!)
I do admit to harbouring mixed emotions. The DC area has been home for eleven years and I have been overwhelmed with experiences of all kinds; both good and bad, of course. Primarily, though I have made great friends, had wonderful colleagues, met fascinating people and enjoyed immensely living in the same city as the National Gallery of Art, the entire Smithsonian, the National Mall, (even our less than popular leader and the folks participating in the inner workings of our political process), Artomatic and individuals from all walks of life here in this very capitol of cities. Living here has helped shape the person I have become and will continue to impact the person I will be. It is tough to leave but I am thrilled and excited to embark on the next leg of the journey. I will be teaching art teachers. What better way to share, put into practice and instill in others my own love of my chosen discipline?

Open House at Georgetown Galleries in Canal Square

Come see MOCA DC's current show: "A Celebration of the Figure V"
This Friday night is the regular 3rd Friday Open House for all galleries in Canal Square. Not many people know the heritage of this group, which started about 19 years ago this past May. In its heyday, there were about 9 galleries in and around the Square. Over time, it has been reduced to Alla Rogers galleries - her larger one and the Petite Gallery to the right. Then comes Parish Gallery, operated by Norm Parish for 17 or 18 years. A couple of years ago, Norm expanded his gallery into the space formerly occupied by Fraser Gallery, operated by Lenny Campello and his wife. They moved to Bethesda some years ago and maintained both locations until closing the Canal Square entity about 2 years ago. Next comes MOCA DC - founded by Clark some 17 years ago, and now operated by Dave Quammen for about 3 1/2 years. Cross-Mckenzie sublet space from Alla Rogers to open a gallery that specializes in ceramics. Last is the Smith-Parada gallery just above the steps at the rear of the courtyard.

So, come see what these galleries have to offer - in addition to the hors d'ouerves and desserts provided by the Sea Catch Restaurant.

Kick Off Five-Week Extravaganza
Artomatic, the Washington, D.C., area’s homegrown art extravaganza, opens to the
public at noon on Friday, May 9, with over 700 visual artists and 300 performances,
including the fire-dancing troupe Flights of Fire and performance art in the form of a new
TV game show, “The Road to Success!” in just the first weekend. Live music will range
from acoustic and folk rock, pop, jazz, funk, oldies, and rockabilly to experimental, indie,
new wave, and “electro-acoustic psychedelic world dance music.”
The NoMa (north of Massachusetts Avenue) Business Improvement District (BID) is
hosting Artomatic 2008 at the Capitol Plaza I building, located at 1200 First Street (1st
and M Streets), N.E., in Washington, D.C., just one block west of the New York Avenue
Metro station. Show hours are Fridays and Saturdays: noon–2 a.m.; Sundays: noon–10
p.m.; Wednesdays and Thursdays: 5 p.m.–10 p.m.; closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Artomatic’s closing day is June 15.
“NoMa is ready to welcome tens of thousands of visitors to Artomatic so they can see
the transformation that is under way in NoMa,” said Elizabeth Price, President of the
NoMa BID. “NoMa is currently a hotbed of construction activity and now, thanks to

the artistic community can create.”

Highlights of Artomatic’s opening weekend include:

• Unveiling of nine floors of 2-D and 3-D visual arts presentations by more than
700 local and regional artists.

• “Electro-acoustic psychedelic world dance music” by Baltimore’s Telesma at 9

Up to 800 artists and 50,000 visitors expected in D.C.’s most exciting new neighborhood

The NoMa (north of Massachusetts Avenue) Business Improvement District (BID) will host this year’s Artomatic, the Washington, D.C. area’s homegrown art extravaganza. From May 9 through June 15, 2008, up to 800 local and regional artists will exhibit their works on eight floors of the Capitol Plaza 1 building, located at 1st and M Streets, N.E., just one block from the New York Avenue Metro station.

Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic transforms an unfinished indoor space into an exciting and incredibly diverse arts event that is free and open to the public. In addition to displays and sales by hundreds of artists, the event features free musical, dance, and theater performances; holiday celebrations; films; educational presentations; and much more.

This year’s Artomatic, occupying 200,000 square feet at Capitol Plaza 1, will be the largest to date. Designed by renowned architect Shalom Baranes and owned by an affiliate of The Polinger Company, Capitol Plaza 1 offers 293,000 rentable square feet of Class A office space, with dramatic Capitol and city views from the upper floors.

“We are thrilled to partner with Artomatic in an event that will bring tens of thousands of people to NoMa,” said Elizabeth Price, president of the NoMa BID. “It is a great opportunity to showcase the transformation that is underway in NoMa and infuse it with the energy and creativity of the artistic community.”

Mr Foox creates art for the love of beautiful things, hidden messages and meanings, and all that is magical.

"My goal is to overwhelm the mind with images and colors that swim with each other and throughout the canvas or board. I have adopted an approach that is part anime, part pop, and part old skool shading. Being color blind myself has simply meant using stronger contrasts in shading and more reds and browns. It also means that while something looks well shaded to me, it must REALLY pop for anyone else with normal vision! My inspiration comes from: the number "8", dragons, graf lettering, inane politics, time and space travel, good kicks, acrylics, the color "ice blue", and loud music. Thanks for reading this far." Mr Foox resides and creates in Dallas Texas with his wife and partner Jessica and their Wheaton terrier Stetson. Together they continue to create a prolific body of work for representative galleries and people that ask nicely. Mr Foox loves his art the way he loves his Texas steak - well done champ. Born in South Africa but reared in New Zealand, Mr Foox makes quite the Texas transplant.

Jessica Foox
I was born in Hadley, MA in the 80's. I grew up surrounded by a mixed Euro-Mediterranean heritage. Growing up with such contrasting cultures and surroundings has greatly influenced my art. I started with simple monochrome sketchings. I would always draw humans - mostly the female form. I think being one myself (human and female that is) made me feel more comfortable making pictures of them.

After studying art therapy and working in the field, I decided to leave this career path and pursue painting full time. In short, I started doing what I love.

Street art played an enormous role in why I started painting - because it allowed me to add color to my drawings. Teaching yourself to paint and to create your own reality on each canvas is one of the greatest joys an artist can experience. It may have taken me longer than most, but I was born an artist. When my husband David and I met and started working together- we both new it was our dream and we dropped all of our extra baggage to fully get into it.

I don't limit myself to painting any specific thing, but looking at my work anyone can see that I paint a lot of human creatures. I feel like being a human allows my mind to work very intimately with the subject on my canvas. Limbs, musculature, flesh, hair, breasts, and even feet - they all fascinate me. I love painting the human body. It is a vessel we are all given to roam around in. I love to explore ideas of human consciousness, awareness, dreamlike states, and emotion in my paintings. Being exposed vulnerable sensual and whimsical. Painting on a clean canvas is like creating my own dreams without sleeping. If you can dream it, it will come.

Black Cats Resident DJ Lil'e
Black Cats Resident DJ Lil'e, aka Erin Myers, specializes in rare extended mixes and one-hit wonders whose names have been swallowed by time. Remember Flesh for Lulu, Kon Kan or Anything Box? But Lil'e does not sacrifice a solid dance floor just to showcase her extensive record collection.

Lil'e, 32, who started "Right Round" in 2002, focuses on skillful mixing, but she still finds a few moments of each song to step back from her mixer and do a little dancing herself. When she plays at other venues such as Felix or Saint-Ex, Lil'e strays far from the '80s, breaking out underground hip-hop, big beat and assorted electronica.

The Artwork of Ted Kliman
Works by Ted Kliman, nationally renowned painter, will be on display along with works by members of the Art Whino collaboration. Ted received his MFA from the Maryland Institute, College of art and has held a successful career of solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries across the nation. Influenced by the works of El Greco and Kathe Kollwitz, Ted’s works connotes a vision of movement and form through the depiction of fabric seemingly draping invisible human forms in motion. Ted Kliman's work is followed by many and in over 200 collections.

Robert Kacher Wines
Robert “Bobby” Kacher was born and raised in Florida, and attended the University of Maryland. During sophomore year summer break, he strapped on a backpack and headed to Europe in the time-honored tradition of the American college student experience. While backpacking through France, Bobby discovered a lifestyle of wine, food, family, and the vineyards and kitchens of France. This lifestyle captivated Bobby and it grew to become an all-consuming passion. Twenty two years ago, he founded Robert Kacher Selections and is now heralded as one of the area’s most respected wine experts in the country.

Yoko K. (a.k.a. aphrodizia)
Organic Electronica - weaving the layers of hypnotic soundscape, Yoko K. (a.k.a. aphrodizia), a laptop composer/vocalist, aspires to mediate between the sensual and the spiritual life. Soothing yet at times haunting, the flow of her sound inscribes dichotomies such as nature and synthesis; future and nostalgia; urban and primitive; death and life - in harmony.

Born and raised in Japan, Yoko began the study of classical piano at the age of 3, learned to play several music instruments throughout her childhood, sang at jazz clubs, and eventually started to produce music on her laptop. Her production received numerous awards such as Grand Prize at the Artists Forum Electronic Music Competition (Electronic Jazz Category) in 2007, and New Media and Audio Grant by the Washington DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in 2006; her debut album "012906" was nominated for "Best Album in Electronica" by the 6th Annual Independent Music Awards, and was selected for "the listener's choice."

Yoko has performed for art galleries, events/happenings, clubs and festivals across the US, and collaborated with various visual and performing artists; in May 2006, her collaborative work has been featured in W/PAC Experimental Media Series at Corcoran Gallery of Art. Her vocals have been featured by producers across the globe, such as Dalminjo (Deeplay Music - Sweden), Holmes Ives (Ova Records - US), Ali Kesanto (Cheeky Punster - Finland), and Danilo Venturi (Italy). She also participates in Dust Galaxy, a solo project of Rob Garza from Thievery Corporation, as a keyboard player and a backing vocalist. Yoko is also keen on utilizing her music as a way of raising awareness for cross-cultural understanding and tolerance; her ongoing projects include "Amahoro" which features the narrative of 1994 Rwanda Genocide. JoKa is a contemporary artist specializing in pointillism, using toothpicks as his sole form of paint application. A student of inefficiency, his personal philosophy is “it isn’t art if it doesn’t take three times longer than it’s supposed to!” Common subjects include: raw meat, charbroiled meat, sex, dissection, hypnosis, mammalian societal bonds, youth corruption, obesity, morbid obesity, swashbuckling, insects, male-pattern baldness, bumps, self-loathing, candy corn and clones. Using collage, he skews and distorts, pushing familiar images into the surreal. His work has been called nostalgic, though not by him. Twenty eight year old artist, J. Coleman, lives and paints in Washington D.C. Coleman has been showing consistently for six years now and has been featured in multiple exhibitions. After earning his degree from the University of Mary Washington, Coleman apprenticed under D.C. painter, Matt Sesow. Since then he has quickly become a prominent figure in the D.C. art scene. Justin Lovato Solo Show
Justin Lovato spent his childhood in a suburban neighborhood in Sacramento, CA. From an early age he was constantly surrounded by art supplies which provided nourishment for his artistic endeavors. Drawing inspiration from comic books, video games, and cartoons, in his early youth Justin consistently stuck to drawing on paper and the occasional canvas painting, until he discovered the long practiced art of graffiti.
Hopping trains, climbing buildings and billboards, and venturing under bridges are all part of the process and lifestyle of graffiti and street art that have profoundly influenced Justin. He believes that it is a taking back of free space, a way of not succumbing to the idea that you can only express yourself to society if you have large amounts of money to spend on advertisements.
Justin is a self-taught artist who employs a wide range of influences. Aside from his roots in the process and subject matter of graffiti and street art, Justin is also motivated by the underground art and music culture, 14th century religious European art, and of course, 1970’s zombie movies.
The characters and subject matter in his paintings often tell some arcane and dark story, which is expressed through steady-handed intricate line work. Through layering of vivid color, he narrates the intriguing and amusing tales of seemingly pain-stricken, weathered, and worn individuals. However, his subjects manage to maintain an aura of humor due to their representational, illustrative appearance. Justin’s work carries bold themes inspired by his own criticisms of modern pop culture and the mental environment, pharmaceutical companies, occult and religious symbolism, and our political climate.

Thomas Blondet (aka Tom B) Performing in the Back Gallery
Thomas Blondet (aka Tom B) is a Washington DC DJ regarded highly for his impeccable taste and understanding of music. Revered locally and nationally as much for his technical ability as he is for his experience behind the decks, Tom B has for the past 15 years held residencies in several influential DC dance clubs, notably the legendary Club Red. He is currently at the Eighteenth Street Lounge and Club Five on Fridays and Saturdays respectively. Starting at age 14, inspired by the early sounds of Mr Fingers and Masters At Work, Tom developed an informed musical palette. He went on to the natural progression of music production after solidifying his roots on dance floors along the East Coast. In the studio, Tom's House and Latin music influences come to the forefront with releases on Odds and Ends and Rhythm & Culture Recordings, to name a few. With remix credits for such artists as Vivian Green on Sony Music and Marlon D on Jellybean Recordings, Tom B is concentrating on building and expanding his catalogue and pursuing his passion for deejaying. Market 5 Gallery Needs your help!!!

For over 30 years Market 5 Gallery has operated in the north hall of
Washington, DC's historic Eastern Market as an alternative art space.
Despite the fact that the space has no indoor plumbing or climate
control, this non profit arts organization has thrived and launched
many a career in the arts. A few years ago, Market 5 went to court to
fight an illegal eviction by the city. The case was settled out of
court but the rent was raised almost 10 fold with the promise of
indoor plumbing, heat, an upgraded electrical system and other
improvements to bring the entire market up to code. Now that
improvements are underway on the south hall of the market, the city is
trying to illegally evict Market 5 Gallery again. Please help the
gallery by signing a petition to stop this eviction.

Join Market 5 Gallery and its supporters Saturday, December 15 @ 1 pm
to protest the eviction of Market 5 Gallery. Washington, DC's Office
of Property Management (OPM) and its contractors have bullied and
harassed Market 5 Gallery ever since it was given oversight of Eastern
Market's North Hall. On Tuesday morning, OPM broke in the gallery and
changed the locks under the guise of a window inspection. Later that
day an OPM official said it was a mistake and that they would send
someone to let gallery staff in on Wednesday. Somehow, the window
inspection and lock change caused the gallery computers to crash.
Computer Geeks will give a full report of the problem when the
computers are fixed. We need your voice to put an end to this kind of
harassment and illegal activity by the government. We need you to:

The Mason Jar and Kickballers present Washington D.C.’s first exhibit/charity auction to feature artwork on toys. The exhibit is called
“Say Whaaat!” and will be on display from December 18th – January 25. at the ArtWhino gallery located on 717 N. Saint Asaph St. in Alexandria VA. All of the customized toys by participating artists will be auctioned on eBay in order to generate proceeds
for charity and to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. The artist lineup for the “Say Whaaat!” exhibit now exceeds 100 artists & there will be more than 150 customized toys; all contributing positively to a charity, which focuses on feeding the needy.

This exhibit will be the first ever in D.C. to feature the vinyl toy culture, an already established and ever increasing in popularity
worldwide phenomenon. The vinyl toy culture is a continuous source of innovation, avant-garde art and cutting edge ideals, which are
manifested on three-dimensional figures. Through the “Say Whaaat” exhibit the D.C. area will be exposed to this new and innovative
genre of art. This exhibit will allow Washington DC. area artists and invited artists to participate in an exhibit on toys as well as charitably
donate their work for auction on eBay.

The Solo Show of Justin Lovato and Art Whino's Collaboration Featuring 20 New Artists

Justin Lovato Solo Show
Justin Lovato spent his childhood in a suburban neighborhood in Sacramento, CA. From an early age he was constantly surrounded by art supplies which provided nourishment for his artistic endeavors. Drawing inspiration from comic books, video games, and cartoons, in his early youth Justin consistently stuck to drawing on paper and the occasional canvas painting, until he discovered the long practiced art of graffiti.
Hopping trains, climbing buildings and billboards, and venturing under bridges are all part of the process and lifestyle of graffiti and street art that have profoundly influenced Justin. He believes that it is a taking back of free space, a way of not succumbing to the idea that you can only express yourself to society if you have large amounts of money to spend on advertisements.
Justin is a self-taught artist who employs a wide range of influences. Aside from his roots in the process and subject matter of graffiti and street art, Justin is also motivated by the underground art and music culture, 14th century religious European art, and of course, 1970’s zombie movies.
The characters and subject matter in his paintings often tell some arcane and dark story, which is expressed through steady-handed intricate line work. Through layering of vivid color, he narrates the intriguing and amusing tales of seemingly pain-stricken, weathered, and worn individuals. However, his subjects manage to maintain an aura of humor due to their representational, illustrative appearance. Justin’s work carries bold themes inspired by his own criticisms of modern pop culture and the mental environment, pharmaceutical companies, occult and religious symbolism, and our political climate.

Art Whino Permanent Gallery
Art Whino adds 20 new artists to its Permanent Gallery bringing the number to 80 participating artists and over 400 pieces of art on exhibit. The opening reception takes place on December 14th, 2007 from 6-12pm, and will include music by Yoko K. and Tom B.
Art Whino's collaboration artists, Justin Lovato, will showcase a live art installation during the show which one lucky person will get to take home!
Additionally, Art Whino continues to partner with a local DC non-profit. Organic Electronica - weaving the layers of hypnotic soundscape, Yoko K. (a.k.a. aphrodizia), a laptop composer/vocalist, aspires to mediate between the sensual and the spiritual life. Soothing yet at times haunting, the flow of her sound inscribes dichotomies such as nature and synthesis; future and nostalgia; urban and primitive; death and life - in harmony.

Born and raised in Japan, Yoko began the study of classical piano at the age of 3, learned to play several music instruments throughout her childhood, sang at jazz clubs, and eventually started to produce music on her laptop. Her production received numerous awards such as Grand Prize at the Artists Forum Electronic Music Competition (Electronic Jazz Category) in 2007, and New Media and Audio Grant by the Washington DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in 2006; her debut album "012906" was nominated for "Best Album in Electronica" by the 6th Annual Independent Music Awards, and was selected for "the listener's choice."

Yoko has performed for art galleries, events/happenings, clubs and festivals across the US, and collaborated with various visual and performing artists; in May 2006, her collaborative work has been featured in W/PAC Experimental Media Series at Corcoran Gallery of Art. Her vocals have been featured by producers across the globe, such as Dalminjo (Deeplay Music - Sweden), Holmes Ives (Ova Records - US), Ali Kesanto (Cheeky Punster - Finland), and Danilo Venturi (Italy). She also participates in Dust Galaxy, a solo project of Rob Garza from Thievery Corporation, as a keyboard player and a backing vocalist. Yoko is also keen on utilizing her music as a way of raising awareness for cross-cultural understanding and tolerance; her ongoing projects include "Amahoro" which features the narrative of 1994 Rwanda Genocide. Yoko currently lives in Washington DC.

Thomas Blondet (aka Tom B) Performing in the Back Gallery
Thomas Blondet (aka Tom B) is a Washington DC DJ regarded highly for his impeccable taste and understanding of music. Revered locally and nationally as much for his technical ability as he is for his experience behind the decks, Tom B has for the past 15 years held residencies in several influential DC dance clubs, notably the legendary Club Red. He is currently at the Eighteenth Street Lounge and Club Five on Fridays and Saturdays respectively. Starting at age 14, inspired by the early sounds of Mr Fingers and Masters At Work, Tom developed an informed musical palette. He went on to the natural progression of music production after solidifying his roots on dance floors along the East Coast. In the studio, Tom's House and Latin music influences come to the forefront with releases on Odds and Ends and Rhythm & Culture Recordings, to name a few. With remix credits for such artists as Vivian Green on Sony Music and Marlon D on Jellybean Recordings, Tom B is concentrating on building and expanding his catalogue and pursuing his passion for deejaying. With more tracks ready for release in addition to critical acclaim, Thomas Blondet has truly come into his own.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—artdc.org, a Washington, D.C., artist’s forum, presents “Art in Transition Continued” on Saturday, October 13, 2007, in the future Greater Goods building, 1626 U Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20009. Doors open at noon; an art party is 6 p.m. to midnight.

“Art in Transition Continued” is the continuance of a group art show held in 2005. For the first show, “Art in Transition,” 27 Washington, D.C.-area artists displayed their work in four transitioning commercial spaces in Silver Spring, Md.

This year’s show is in the future home of Greater Goods at 1626 U Street, NW. This “empty” building provides the perfect opportunity for an organization such as artdc to host its own art show. Jesse Cohen, founder of artdc.org, explains, “Transitional space provides an opportunity to develop grassroots art shows, which currently aren’t available through existing spaces.”

The participating artists are: Steve Mead, Antoinette Wysocki, Jodi A. Patterson, John N. Grunwell, Dan Rosenstein, Alexandra Zealand, Alexandra Silverthorne, Kim Reyes, Emily Berl, Christie Ortiz, Rhett Rebold, Raju Singh, Steve Loya, Stephen T. Hanks, Matthew Best, Graham Meyer and Adam Eig.

“A unique feature about this show, aside from the great art,” Cohen says, “is that the artwork was selected by an external jury member who does not have ties to artdc.org artists.”

Mark S. Waskow, art collector and founder of the Waskomium in Burlington, Vt., is the juror for “Art in Transition Continued.” The Waskomium is a collection of contemporary Vermont art.
Waskow selected the work of 17 artdc.org members (there are more than 1,500 members of artdc.org). Pieces include 2-D, 3-D and installation art.

“He (Waskow) juried the art from artdc.org’s online gallery,” Cohen says of the selection process, “based on the idea that you can experience the presence of a work of art through its image.”

A fellow artdc.org member recommended that Waskow jury “Art in Transition Continued” because of Waskow’s support for the development of art communities.

Through events like “Art in Transition Continued,” artdc.org initiates artist discovery, encourages art discussion, advances creative development and promotes art collection, with the goal of developing movements in Washington, D.C. artdc.org provides virtual real estate for artists and art organizations. artdc.org aims to bridge the communication between artists of all mediums, galleries and collectors. With this goal in mind, the aim of artdc.org is to develop face-to-face relationships in addition to those in the virtual world.

Derrick Wolbaum Solo Show
A certain death and its process have imprinted Derrick Wolbaum with a sense of transition and decay. This sensation has inadvertently left its mark on his work over the years and is consistently reoccurring today. In addition, the concept of ‘Redemption through Suffering,’ a by-product of growing up a catholic in the Midwest, has also left its mark on his efforts.

Recently Derrick has experimented with water and layering. The use of water has played a vital role, acting as a sealant and as a visual sauce maintaining a sense of viscera for final renderings. In his work he strips down the human figure creating an objectification of the body and a sense of honesty. The human figure as a pile of meat or in a certain stage of decay represents a truth that he can relate to. In a sense his paintings represent the fact of reality that what people leave behind besides memories is an object- a body. This information is especially valuable in our current affluent condition.

The Arts Club of Washington is pleased to announce The One Word Project, a group exhibition that is the capstone of a three-year exploration of the triangular dialogue between artist, work, and viewer. Featuring more than 30 artists and a wide array of media, the show runs from August 28 to September 29; an opening reception will be held on Friday, September 7 from 6:30-9:00pm.

Begun in 2004 as an online forum for stimulating artists to speak freely about their work, The One Word Project is a deliberate enactment of the 'conversation' between artist and viewer. Interested in seeking new ways to capture pure creative response, curator J.T. Kirkland distilled the traditional artist interview to its most basic element: a single word. After digesting the work of a self-selecting group of artists, Kirkland prompted each with a word of his choosing, to which each artist was asked to respond in approximately100–500 words. The resulting statements—which vary in length, approach, and relevance to the original word—offer a written correlative that informs and enhances the viewer's appreciation of the artist's work.

For Kirkland, the process of making art is as valuable and interesting as the work itself. The One Word Project reveals a fascination with the translation from artist mind to realized art object. The single word prompt minimizes the polluting influence of the viewer's agenda; spurred by an intentionally open-ended stimulus, the resulting self-articulation offers unfiltered insights into process.

In 2006, the work and words of The One Word Project artists were collected in a full-color art book of the same title. The current exhibition represents the natural conclusion of this three-year arc. Each piece is accompanied by Kirkland's word and the artists' response, offering a rare glimpse into the mind of the artist by both visual and verbal avenues. Viewers are encouraged to add their own impressions to the 'conversation'.

The artist now invites viewers to emulate the physical + verbal assaults marginalized groups have endured by penning hate-inspired epithets such as 'dyke', 'spic' or 'nigger' on her body.

Coble anticipates that the act of marking another person will elicit emotional discomfort for both artist and participant. By granting permission to express these terms on her body, the artist hopes this act will engender a larger community of people assisting in collective history of the 'reclaiming' of hateful speech.

My Space on 7th is a show featuring floor to ceiling art by artists from every level of experience, emerging to established. Artists purchased 22 square foot sections of wall space in Touchstone Gallery’s main room on a first-come, first-serve basis. Within their space, they could hang whatever they wanted and however much they wanted. And, they receive 100% of their sales! The exhibit has been a fantastic success, with over 200 people in attendance on opening night. Don’t miss your chance to view a variety of styles, mediums and points of view, as well as some very affordable prices!

The Capital Fringe Festival performs at Touchstone Gallery: Last year at this time, CapFringe had sold $20,000 in ticket sales. This year, before the shows have even begun, they’ve sold $40,000 in ticket sales!

During the month of October 2007, The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law, together with the CUA Department of Art and Campus Ministry, will sponsor the juried art exhibition entitled, Images of Justice, which will explore the theme of social justice through the vision of local artists in a broad spectrum of two- and three-dimensional media. The art displays will serve as a tangible expression of a theme well recognized by the law students and faculty who work with the law school’s clinical programs, serving the legal and, in many cases, fundamental needs of the indigent and underrepresented members of our local community.

Numerous events will be scheduled at the law school to coincide with the Images of Justice Art Show, including a national conference on The Role of Law Schools in Fostering Commitment to Pro Bono Publico, scheduled on October 5 and 6, 2007. Eligibility:

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and must reside within a fifty mile range of

Members of the Catholic University community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni

Guidelines:

● Submissions must include:

1. Completed and signed entry form

2. Images on labeled slides or CD

3. One-or two-paragraph statement on how art work relates to the theme of social
justice
4. A self-addressed, stamped envelope must be included for the return of materials

Artists may submit up to three original images of 2-D and 3-D media, including drawings,
paintings, sculptures, photography, videos and multimedia; maximum dimensions not to
exceed 60 inches in width.

Artwork must have been completed within the last three years and must be available for the
duration of the exhibition.

The University will not engage in the sale of art work, however artists wishing to make their
works available for sale may do so by providing business cards, which will be available to the
public.

Selected artists must deliver and pick up artwork to and from the Columbus School of Law,

Each artist may submit up to three images on slides or CD, a one- or two-paragraph

KNEW GALLERY’S exhibit - A GOOD TIME IS NOW - features Philadelphia and New York artists Michael Ciervo, Paul Campbell, Cecilia Biagini, Cibele Vieira, and others in its Summer of Art exhibit that includes works by Gallery artists Fernando Canovas, John Fasano, Peter Fox, and Raimundo Rubio. Using every inch of the two floors and courtyard space at KNEW GALLERY’S location plus the exhibit space at the District Fine Arts (DFA) space two blocks north of KNEW GALLERY at 1726 Wisconsin Avenue, visitors to both exhibits will be treated to a smorgasbord of color and process crossing various artistic media - from photographs and paintings to somewhere beyond.

DFA will feature several artists who created art in the days when Summer of Love consciousness gave birth to key moments of social change that changed everything. The line-up of DFA artists includes Richard Friedman, Gene Markowski, Robert Otter, Steven Rosenberg, and Karl Umlaff,

The staging of the openings in tandem refers back to both Galleries’ July 2006 exhibits in which each gallery’s audience was encouraged to visit the other gallery - conveying positive energy reminiscent of the feel good times of the best of the hippie days.

The Exercises for Emerging Artists - E4: Station to Station

Please join Transformer this Thursday evening, July 12, from 6:30 - 8pm for the first of four "opening events" in the E4: Station to Station Series.

E4: Station to Station, featuring four dynamic DC area based artists - Rebecca C. Adams, Carolina Mayorga, Rob Parrish, and Fereshteh Toosi - and guest curated by Niels Van Tomme, consists of four individual artist projects resulting from the fourth installment of Transformer's unique peer critique and mentorship program, The Exercises for Emerging Artists.

Incorporating video, sound, performance art, and conceptual mixed media installation, each of this year's E4: Station to Station artists will take over the Transformer project space for one-week, beginning July 11, 2007, to present new work resulting from their peer-critique and mentorship experience at Transformer. Opening events including performances and artist talks will take place each Thursday, July 11 - August 4, 2007 from 6:30 - 8pm.

"I wanted to involve artists who could further transform the gallery into an experiential space; into temporary stations of media art," states Van Tomme. "Each of the artists brings a very specific approach to Transformer in establishing a relationship between their work, the gallery space and the audience."

Beginning in March through June 2007, the artists participated in facilitated bi-weekly meetings discussing the challenges they face as artists, the inspiration that helps propel them forward, as well as their artistic intentions and goals. Launched in March 2004, The Exercises for Emerging Artists was created to support artists at critical points or crossroads in their professional growth and development; to stimulate and encourage artists as they create new work.

In addition to several peer critique sessions, participating artists receive mentorship and feedback from area gallerists, more established artists, professors, and curators. This year's mentors included UMBC's Associate Professor of Visual Arts Steve Bradley, composer and visual artist Alberto Gaitan, Transformer's Executive Director Victoria Reis, The Corcoran's Curator of Photography and Media Arts Paul Roth, Provisions Library Executive Director Don Russell, and E4: Station to Station guest curator Niels Van Tomme.

Cool new on-line art mag!
The idea of ArtCade began about 5 months ago
by a group of local art school students. Currently it is an online magazine, but
in the future they plan to raise money to make a printed version.
ArtCade's goals are to get young artists more exposure and make art
more accesible to the general public. Artcade is doing this with a
fresh/hip/well designed website and the creation of art events designed to allow folks
not to feel timid to go and see art. They hope to encourage people to get rid of the fear
of going to "pretentious" art galleries. The artists they promote are
visual fine artists, designers, musicians, fashionistas, and
creative writers.
