What:Gateway's Heliport Gallery: 8001 Kennett St. : Telling Their Stories
Gateway's Heliport Gallery, a launch pad for the arts and community, in
collaboration with Pyramid Atlantic and with the generous support of the
Carl M. Freeman foundation is proud to announce its second exhibit Telling
Their Stories. Telling Their Stories brought together 12 local artists from
various artistic backgrounds at Pyramid Atlantic for a series of workshops,
where they explored and interpreted their identity and the myriad of ways in
which it can be conveyed. The show features the results of their
introspective and exploratory journey and an opportunity for YOU to tell
your story.
Los Arrieros: 7926 Georgia Ave : Crystal Pittman
Faces, places and memories are all a part of the images Crystal Pittman
paints. Born in New York, she has traveled from Jamaica to Africa
(Ethiopia) where her heart is drawn in search of her spiritual connections.
Crystal has been drawing since she was a child, and learned to paint as a
young adult after attending School of Visual Arts in New York for a short
time in the evenings after working. Crystal paints whatever inspires her to
be creative and does not define a specific style to her work. For many
years she painted on canvas with acrylic paint, but has recently found a
second love of painting with beeswax which she melts and mixes with powdered
pigments. Adhering to this ancient encaustic technique Crystal fuses the
painted image using various heating tools after painting the image with
colored beeswax onto wood panels, heavy watercolor paper or Plexiglas. The
artist's unique painterly style and use of color and texture remain a
constant delight throughout her work.
Alchemy: 8025 Georgia Ave
The store is brimming with the work of over 70 artists and vendors -- lots
of beautiful, affordable and eclectic art. Check out our drumming circle
dates, upcoming classes, and pick up information on the new outdoor artists
market. Be sure and look for Alchemy's booth at Magical Montgomery on
October 1. Stop by for some wine and cheese during ArtWalk evenings.
Pyramid Atlantic: 8230 Georgia Ave. : Fibers of Memory and Digital Textile
Collages
Fibers of Memory represents an intimate portrayal of Gibby Waitzkin's life
as it evolves, echoing cherished memories of people, places and objects and
her life-long passion for the environment. The works are assembled from
recycled materials, which tell their own story as they are transformed into
artworks. The artist's idea is to reconstruct the debris of the past into a
new visible surface that conveys a personal journey deeply embedded in the
cycle of life. The pieces are composed of paper made by the artist with
photographs, scanned imagery, and dried and encaustic-preserved flowers from
her own gardens. In conjunction with this exhibit, Pyramid Atlantic will
offer papermaking demonstrations where participants can get a hands-on
experience making paper from 6 - 9pm during the ArtWalk!
Liani's digitalized images are in tribute to urban life, its rich history
and colorful transitions. His compositions are multi-layered using a variety
of materials and techniques with great emphasis on bold and vibrant colors.
Liani Foster is a multi-media artist with an extensive background in
photography, painting and graphic design. His primary emphasis is mixed
media digital textile collage incorporating traditional and non-traditional
painting and photography techniques to create objective and non-objective
imagery. His images are digitally printed to create new possibilities that
juxtapose designs on paper, textiles, plastics and other substrates. The
works take on sculptural effects.
Kari Minnick Art Glass Studio: 8230 Georgia Ave.
The studio offers architectural commissions, fine art glass, and
internationally recognized courses in kiln formed glass. See new artwork,
jewelry and the new fall course schedule.
Space 7:10 : 963 Bonifant St. : Forest Song
This month, Space 7:10 will be featuring the work of Marilyn Banner. The
work in Forest Song is part of a larger body of work called Rainforest
Memories. Marilyn's intention in all the work is to express the beauty,
delicacy, and mystery she felt in the rainforests of Costa Rica where it
often seemed that the forest had a "sound," or a song, that required
listening on the deepest level. "Many of us want to 'save the planet' now.
Perhaps the first step is to get quiet and focused enough to notice what we
HAVE here, and to love it. Then we can think about what "care" would mean. I
want this work to function as a reminder to the parts of us that need
reminding or reflection of the beauty and mystery of our earth as a mirror
for the parts of our inner selves that understand our connection to the
Earth."
