Drawing during Closting Party at 8 pm Friday, September 29 - 1st one drawn can have their pick. Next one has their pick, etc, until all those who attended that night have something to take home. No need to be present to win: From then on, it's first come, first served - just walk into the gallery during open hours, and take your pick.

Please join Appropriately Yours guest curator José Ruiz and artists Thom Flynn, Champ Taylor, and Richard Vosseller, this Saturday, September 23, 1pm at Transformer for a conversation about the current exhibition and their work.

Appropriately Yours threads together six artists working in various mediums who explore, through formal and informal practices, the current sprawl of ‘appropriation art’, both as an influence and byproduct. Creating a conceptual collage throughout the Transformer space, these artists launch the fifth season of transformational exhibitions presented by Transformer.

Admission is free. Conversation will last until approximately 2pm.

Craghead likens his studio to a bomb crater where pieces of notebook paper, cardboard, post-its, and foam lie in piles surrounded by scraps of pen and pencil drawings, string, plastic, old junk mail, and magazines. Combining clutter into humble yet poignant collage, sculpture, and web-based projects, Craghead offers a witty commentary on the strange beauty of the suburban landscape.

REMIX: East-West Currents in Contemporary Art

REMIX: East-West Currents in Contemporary Art is a juried exhibition featuring forty-six artists, both Asian and non-Asian, who address the interchange of ideas and the intermingling of artistic or cultural influences between Asia and the U.S. Nearly 100 artworks are exhibited in a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, photography and installation. Works selected by Claudia DeMonte (Independent Curator, NYC), Debra Diamond (Coordinating Curator of Contemporary Asian Art, Freer/Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian), and Carol Lukitsch (AAC Curator).

THURSDAY, September 21, 7-9 p.m. A special musical presentation by The Central Javanese Gamelan Ensemble of the Embassy of Indonesia, an ensemble of nearly twenty musicians led by Pak Muryanto (on kendhang, or drums) presenting a casual concert of classical Javanese gamelan music to accompany the REMIX exhibition.

THURSDAY, September 28, 7-9 p.m. The third and final of the 2006 series, In Two Tongues/En dos lenguas bilingual poetry reading featuring established poets and emerging new voices from the Mid-Atlantic region. Master poets include Robert Giron and Brian Gilmore. This exciting program has been made possible through the generosity of the Arlington Community Foundation.

FRIDAY, September 29, 7-8:30 p.m. The East Coast Premiere screening of David Ngo’s The Queen of Virginia: The Jackie Bong Wright Story, featuring the journey of former Vietnam War refugee, Jackie Bong Wright, as she competes in the week-long 2004 Ms. Senior America Pageant. Ngo’s film won Best Documentary at this year’s VC Film Fest, the 21st Annual Asian Pacific American Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA. The filmmaker and Jackie Bong Wright will attend this evening’s events. Seating is first come-first served.

As part of an ambitious multi-city project, the WPA\C joins with the
Creative Alliance for an exchange of artists and exhibitions. At The
Patterson, WPA\C recruited artist Gabriel Martinez to curate a selection
of slightly off-the-radar DC artists. Meanwhile, Creative Capitalism's
Peter Quinn along with Jackie Milad assembles Baltimore artists at
Warehouse in DC that highlight Charm City 's experimental, collaborative,
sometimes subversive streak. Sidestepping questions of regional identity,
the exhibitions probe more deeply to consider how artists today engage
their surroundings, and relate to a commercial marketplace that is
increasingly taken for granted.
