Convergences

Convergences:

Towards a Jewish/Muslim Renewal

Featuring the art and thought of Tunisian Muslim artist Karim Chaibi
and American Jewish artist Tom Block

February 9 – April 9, 2007
Opening reception Friday February 9, 6-8 PM

Jews and Muslims, Biblical cousins, enjoyed nearly a five hundred year golden era during the Middle Ages, when, circling the Mediterranean Sea, these two peoples built one of the most peaceful societies of human history.

Convergences explores the positive aspects of the Jewish/Muslim liaison, and posits that we can reach into the shared history of both peoples for resources to lead towards a positive renewal of this relationship.

Muslim and Jewish traditions branch from one tree. From Kosher and Hallal food proscriptions to the Sufi and Hasidic mystical systems, from sister alphabets to a similar lexicon for the words of greatest importance, Arabs and Jews have practiced startlingly similar religions for the past 1500 years. Indeed, from the beginning of Islam, Muslims and Jews have shared the tempo of the sun in the timing of their prayers, Muslims beginning their Friday prayers at the very moment Jews light their Sabbath candles.

Convergences investigates the intertwined traditions from two specific points of view. Karim Chaibi, who traveled a personal path from Islamic fundamentalist to open-minded writer and artist with Sufi inclinations, looks at the similarities between Jewish and Muslim law. Tom Block, who considers himself a Jewish/Sufi, has undertaken an academic and artistic study of the surprising linkages between Jewish and Islamic mysticism. Taken together, these two artists propose a shared conviction that the arts, and open-minded conversation between Jews and Muslims, can help lead from the misunderstandings currently enveloping the relationship between these historic cousins to a renewal of peace and friendship.

Additionally, a series of events will highlight specific aspects of this shared heritage, with panel talks and cultural activists taking place in the gallery throughout the two-month run of the exhibit. Ultimately, Convergences hopes to become part of a growing conversation of peace and renewal between Jews and Muslims, both in the United States and abroad.

FLUX - An Art Sensory Overload

FLUX - An Art Sensory Overload

In the metaphorical sea of urban America, artists have been drifting away with the tide, as sterile office buildings and chain franchises sail in and the rents skyrocket. In the latest area to fall victim to such conformity, Arlington’s Clarendon neighborhood, the Art Outlet is partnering with Walnut Street Development, artdc.org, Arlington Independent Media (AIM) and DC Conspiracy to cast the large anchor with its “Flux: An Art Sensory Overload” from 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, at the Danville Body Shop, 1415 N. Danville Street in Arlington, VA 22201.

The DC Conspiracy will hold their event “Washington DC Counter Culture Festival” at Dr. Dremo's from 4:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. You can find more information on their web site at www.dcconspiracy.com.

Flux: An Art Sensory Overload
At The Danville Body Shop, your eyes will feast on paintings, sculpture, and similar visual art fare. You’ll also be treated to four bands, an interactive video/sound performance piece, fire juggling, aerial dance performance, and improv theatre. And if pleasing attendees aurally, visually and esthetically isn’t enough, there will be an art raffle and an art salon open to everyone for the duration. Save the relaxation for the wine and cheese set; this artistic excursion will overload your senses with the unlimited possibilities of artistic endeavor.

Cities are often judged by tourism statistics and their economies, which are worthy of consideration. But from Rome to Paris, from London to New York, from Toronto to Los Angeles, from Tokyo to Beijing, from Bombay to Istanbul, behind every great city is a vibrant artistic scene -- be it architecture, popular music, museums, theatre, the symphony, or filmmaking. In a modern world where graph paper often trumps the canvas, Art Outlet seeks to give local artists a voice and enable visitors to witness first hand what artists can do for neighborhoods.

By including representatives from virtually all artistic media, “Flux: An Art Sensory Overload” proves that while urban areas may be in flux, the artistic community remains constant -- providing character for neighborhoods being swallowed whole by corporate America.

The Danville Body Shop is located next to Whole Foods between Clarendon Boulevard and Wilson Boulevard, equidistant from the Courthouse and Clarendon Metro stops at 1415 N. Danville Street in Arlington, VA 22201.

Dr. Dremo’s is located near the Court House Metro at 2001 Clarendon Blvd. in Arlington, VA 22201

January Exhibits at AAC

Fresh Paint: Process and Possibility
Through January 27, 2007
Fresh Paint explores the work of fourteen Mid-Atlantic painters focusing on process and materials as a means of questioning present-day reality. While they clearly take pleasure in the physicality of paint itself, the artists utilize a variety of alternative materials such as resin, glue, milk, henna, latex, clay and even robotics. At times they utilize unusual techniques which forego the use of a brush or canvas: paint skins are manipulated into sculptural forms, house paint is worked with power tools, needles and syringes are used to inject paint into resin.

Exhibiting artists are: Anthony Brock, Byron Clercx, Eric Finzi, Pat Goslee, Christopher P. Hoeting, Tati Kaupp, Kevin Kepple, Isabel Manalo, Michael Materese, Cara Ober, Susan Palmisano, Stefan Prosky, Lynda Ray, Shinji Turner-Yamamoto. This exhibition was curated by AAC Curator Carol Lukitsch. A catalogue accompanies this exhibition.

Solo Exhibition: Roberto Bocci, Cycles, Elements, and Space in Between. An interactive multimedia installation, in our Chairmen’s Gallery.

Resident Studio Artist: Evan Reed, New and Recent Sculpture, in our Wyatt Gallery.

Sculpture on the Grounds: Millicent Young, GATE, installation in Clarendon Central Park. Presented in partnership with the Arlington Commission for the Arts and Arlington County’s Cultural Affairs Division. Through April 2007.

Sculpture on the Grounds also includes the continuation of Insight Out on the grounds of the AAC, featuring work by Laura Amussen, Jackson Martin, and Renee Rendine.

Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 am to 5 pm. For more information, call (703) 248.6800 or www.arlingtonartscenter.org. The AAC is located at 3550 Wilson Blvd., in Arlington, VA, just off the Virginia Square-GMU Metro stop on the Orange line.
